Subscriber Test

We posted a blog last night, but I did not get a notice as a subscriber.  It may be because we switched the domain to lastingertravelblog.com.  I made a change to see if it fixes the problem.  This is the test.  If you get this, check out last night's blog re our new tent!

Our New Tent!

Trying out our new tent....the "Copper Spur UL 4" in the living room.
Decided to replace our VERY old tent with a new much lighter one....fully packed it only weighs 5 lbs. and holds the 5 of us comfortably even though it's only a 4 person tent.

I actually did it!

I actually did it...after nearly 20 years of practicing law, I resigned from my position as General Counsel for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on March 1st and now we are in the process of reducing our possessions to one backpack each!  But.. of course here we are just over a month away from our departure and the dining room table is covered with homeschooling materials and I'm nowhere close to having the house packed up yet.   But somehow it will all come together!  Thought I would post some info on pre-trip planning.

School for the kids:
We've decided to do the Calvert School's homeschool program.  It will provide some structure for us as the boys will have to complete tests on a regular basis that will be graded by the Calvert staff.  It has the same accreditation as their school here in St. Pete and they will have a transcript at the end of the year.  Some of Calvert's materials are online others are not.  So, I'm weeding through it all to sort out what we need to take with us and what we don't need.  Our main concerns are math and reading.

I'm also in the process of compiling a reading list for the boys.  I've incorporated the Calvert School's reading list and have borrowed heavily from John Higham's reading list for his children during their family's year long round the world trip(He published a book about their travels called 360 Degrees Longitude, it is a great read and has proved to be a valuable resource for us)  I've also added many books to the list. The idea being for them to read literature and history about the places we are visiting.

Getting Started!

This is the start of the LastingerTraveBlog!  I am not sure what I am doing so this is all trial and error.  Hard to believe we leave in 45 days.  Headed to NC, KY, DC and then NYC.  We fly out to Iceland on 6/20 for a week of camping! Here is a picture of a bat we found.
